Lisa + Aaron | Rainy Day Wedding at the Blue Dress Barn in Benton Harbor, MI

August 2, 2019

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck. If that is the case, Lisa and Aaron have got loads of it! Let me tell you, we were all drenched after this one, but I wouldn't have changed a thing! While it might seem like a curse to have rain on your outdoor wedding day, let these photos prove that there is beauty in showers - and everything will be all right.

Lisa and Aaron were married at the Blue Dress Barn in Benton Harbor, and this place is gorgeous! So many beautiful spots to choose from. I only wish we had more time to explore and take photos (ahem without the rain).

Luckily, the rain held off until after the first look - had we not done a first look, our photos would have been much more limited, but luckily we were allowed this time AND a beautiful hour after sunset of no rain for portraits.

One of my favorite things about the Blue Dress Barn is this awesome camper that the guys got ready in - Big Blue was a favorite photo op for sure.

One thing definitely stood out to me on this day - DETAILS. So many details. If you have followed me long, you know how I love my detail photos, and did this wedding deliver! Lisa had all of her pretty stuff set aside for me when I arrive, and I was in absolute heaven. From the gorgeous florals by my girl Erin from Sage Green Events to her dress, an umbrella that she picked up in China last summer, her grandma's perfume bottle, stationary, ring boxes, hand kerchief (haha don't miss that one - "keep your shit together"), so many gorgeous details. And this is all before we even saw the barn.

While the guys had big blue, the girl's got ready in an adorable little bridal suite below the barn.

Once again, this wedding shows why I adore first looks. Aaron's reaction and this special time together before the ceremony is priceless.

Shortly after the first look, it began to rain. Clear bubble umbrellas are ALWAYS a good idea if you suspect it might rain on your wedding day. How adorable are they??

Throughout the day, we diligently checked our phone for weather updates. When it looked like there would be a break in the rain a half hour after the scheduled ceremony start time, we postponed and went for that time. Trying to take advantage of every rain-free space, we did all the portraits that we could in doorways (to still allow for natural light), and I tried to keep the bride and groom as dry as possible. The same could not be said for myself, my second shooter, and Mike the videographer from Clark Motion Picture Co. Seriously go check him out because his work is amazing, and I HIGHLY recommend him.

When it came time for the ceremony, our break in rain only last about one minute. After rushing to wipe down every chair, it was show time.

After the ceremony, we did what we could for family photos and utilized the doorway to the barn, and let me tell you, I kind of love the way these look.

After dinner, however, the rain stopped, and just before we lost all light, these gorgeous photos happened. The point here is seize the moment. Make due with what you've got. And the results might just be amazing.
